Community Wildfire Safety
The City of Burnaby’s Community Safety and Fire Departments are updating wildfire prevention and mitigation plans for Burnaby Mountain and nearby conservation areas. This work is in response to the evolving wildfire context on Burnaby Mountain, tied to the larger impacts of climate change.

This work includes a partnership between the City of Burnaby and SFU researcher Dr. Sophie Wilkinson, who will evaluate local fire conditions by deploying advanced monitoring stations equipped with weather sensors and soil probes. These systems will generate continuous, high-resolution data on key indicators—such as temperature, humidity, wind, and soil moisture—providing a detailed, real-time picture of how environmental conditions influence wildfire risk.
The data collected will support ongoing analysis of fire behaviour, identify high-risk zones for fire and potential post-fire hazards. By integrating ecological, atmospheric, and soil data, the project offers a comprehensive understanding of the fire environment across different areas of Burnaby Mountain.
